~Hasta luego~

Last month in Guatemala was a beautiful month. What started out so confusing, frustrating, and unclear turned out to be the biggest blessing.

When our quarantine time finally ended, my team was full of energy and so ready to get started with our ministry. We quickly sprung right into our days of ministry. From working at a soup kitchen, to connecting with neighbors in the community of our ministry partners, to helping build a house, our days were full of things to do.

We got to meet and work with the most beautiful and loving family. The Mistecos do all kinds of things in their neighborhood and community. We worked with them everyday and learned so much from them.

On Wednesdays we worked in their soup kitchen, which provides food for the community. We spent the morning preparing and cooking the food. Around noon, neighbors would line up with bowls to receive the food. It was an incredible thing to see so many smiles and friendly faces.

Our big project was building a house for a sweet family in this community. We spent about three weeks mixing concrete, twisting rebar, laying blocks, and learning the art of construction. We were fortunate enough to finish before leaving!

My team and I had such a wonderful time in Guatemala. When we first started, I felt sad and disappointed that my team had to miss out on extra weeks of an amazing ministry. Then I realized that if Covid hadn't have happened, we would never have met the Mistecos at all. We would never have even traveled to Guatemala.

God’s timing and plan are perfect. We can easily get caught up in our own plans and ideas, but that only brings disappointment. Everything we went through this month was a good reminder that the Lord has great things for us. As it says in Proverbs 16:9, “The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.” He will guide us and lead us into something greater than we could ever imagine for ourselves.

Before leaving Guatemala, we had an emotional goodbye with our new friends. But they told us that it’s ‘hasta luego’ not ‘adios’. We have a new family in Guatemala now (and we can’t wait to come back to visit)! It’s a beautiful thing to be involved in a Christ-centered community. Even though not all of us spoke the same language, we were united through the love of Christ. This month I experienced what the church should look like. And I hope that’s something you all find as well.
